However, if we are attacked by pirates, that means they get to them first.

Which means that the pirates will waste their time and energy in a pitiful attempt to defeat them. Think of the Fiertia not as competition but as a decoy - as soon as the enemy is weakened by their efforts, we'll be able to pick the pirates off without ever having to leave the dear ambassador's side.
